The Pittsburgh Pirates' home opener series against the Baltimore Orioles will be even more special. The team plans to promote top prospect Konnor Griffin from Triple-A Indianapolis. This 19-year-old will be tasked with boosting offensive production at the shortstop position, while the team also acknowledges his impressive development.
This decision also stems from Griffin being the Pirates' best option at a crucial position. After being reassigned to minor league camp on March 21, he responded to the adversity in an ideal manner. In his first 16 at-bats at Triple-A, Griffin collected 7 hits, including 3 doubles, with a .438 batting average and a 1.196 OPS. Additionally, he drew 5 walks while striking out only 4 times.
The Pirates wanted to see Griffin make better swing decisions. He admitted being somewhat impatient during spring training, trying to make a good impression, but struggled to effectively hit fastballs and chased pitches outside the strike zone. This was unlike the usual Griffin, who last year handled fastballs easily and had plate discipline far beyond his peers. Consequently, in 16 Grapefruit League games, he batted only .171, though he hit 4 home runs. In his final 10 games, he had just 4 hits in 27 at-bats (.148), striking out 11 times.
The Pirates were initially open to Griffin starting directly in the majors, wanting to see how the young player would respond. Griffin handled the reassignment with remarkable maturity, stating he saw the positives, needed to return to his best self, and focused on his training.
“It was difficult because I felt I was just a step away,” Griffin said, “but now I have more time to prepare. I can get back to being myself.”
Griffin indeed delivered. He got on base, showed composure in the batter's box, utilized his speed on the bases, and positively impacted games in multiple ways. Now, at such a young age, he is about to realize his dream of reaching the major leagues.
Griffin's arrival does not guarantee an immediate contract extension, though both sides are interested in continuing negotiations. However, keeping this 2024 first-round pick on the major league roster might help facilitate an agreement. Yet, the biggest factor driving this decision remains baseball itself, Griffin's response, and the need to improve output at shortstop.
The Pirates opened the season with Jared Triolo as the primary shortstop, with Nick Gonzales also getting playing time. But after six games, Pirates shortstops had an OPS of only .546, ranking 17th in MLB. Defensively, according to FanGraphs' Defensive Runs Saved calculation, only the White Sox (-3) were worse than the Pirates (-2).
With a better option available, the Pirates aren't willing to wait; they want to win now. Griffin will help them do that.
After all, we're talking about the top prospect recognized by all major media outlets. Griffin is viewed as a generational talent, and his ascension to the majors at such a young age must be considered within a historical context.
Last season, Griffin rapidly advanced through three minor league levels. In 122 games, he batted .333 with a .942 OPS, totaling 23 doubles, 4 triples, 21 home runs, 94 RBIs, 117 runs scored, and 65 stolen bases, unanimously earning Minor League Player of the Year honors.
Griffin also won a Gold Glove at shortstop and possesses immense power. During spring training in Pirate City this year, his batting practice sessions often sent balls flying into the batting cages, dorm buildings, and backdrop screens.
Most impressively, Griffin never let it inflate his ego. He remained humble, focused on his work, and strived to absorb knowledge like a sponge—a phrase he repeated often in Florida.
“I still have to work extremely hard every day, whether here or in the majors, that won't change,” Griffin said in February. “I'll continue working to be the best player, aiming for Hall of Fame-level goals. That's definitely the target.”
After Griffin demonstrated to the Pirates that he could handle adversity, and the team wanted to seize every opportunity to improve performance, they will welcome their strongest available reinforcement for the home opener.
