19-year-old top prospect Griffin makes history in debut: This is everything I dreamed of.

At just 19 years old and without Triple-A experience prior to this season, Konnor Griffin, MLB's No. 1 prospect who is said to be negotiating a 9-year, $140 million deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates, made history in his first major league game today, aiding the Pirates in a 5-4 home victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

“There probably isn’t a better script than this. It’s a special day, and winning makes it even happier,” Griffin said. “I can’t wait to celebrate with my family. This is exactly how I imagined it.”

In his major league debut, Griffin was placed by the Pirates as the seventh batter, playing shortstop. In his first plate appearance in the second inning with one out and a runner on first, facing Orioles starter Kyle Bradish, he hit a two-run double after a two-strike, one-ball count, sparking a four-run inning for the team. That RBI ultimately became the winning run.

“I just tried not to get out easily,” Griffin said. “Obviously, there was some nervousness in the first at-bat. I just wanted to start with a good swing and hit a good ball, and I ended up doing it, causing some damage.”

Pirates third baseman Jared Triolo, who later hit a single to bring Griffin home and extend the rally, said: “Konnor set the tone for the game. He kind of opened things up for everyone, showing us how to do it.”

Griffin became the 12th player under 20 years old since 1920, when RBIs began being recorded, to have both an extra-base hit and an RBI in his debut. Today, he had 1 hit in 3 at-bats, with 1 strikeout and 1 walk, also becoming the youngest player in the 21st century to draw a walk in his first career game.
