Dodgers bullpen gets another boost: Closer Edwin Díaz set to return after surgery

The Los Angeles Dodgers' bullpen is poised to gain a major weapon. During a recent interview, manager Dave Roberts disclosed that Edwin Díaz, the expensive closer who has been out for roughly three months recovering from right elbow surgery, is anticipated to be taken off the injured list and return to the big leagues on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old Díaz signed a three-year, $69 million contract with the Dodgers during the offseason, making him the highest-paid reliever in the league. However, early in this season, he struggled with his control, allowing 7 earned runs in just 6 innings over his first 7 appearances, resulting in a 10.50 ERA. After a game in Denver against the Colorado Rockies in late April, Díaz felt discomfort in his arm and underwent tests, leading to the decision to have arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from his right elbow. He was subsequently placed on the 60-day injured list.

Reflecting on the situation, Díaz said, "At that time, I could still pitch, but my arm felt tired and uncomfortable. After discussing with the team, we decided to remove the loose bodies early and focus on rehabilitation, with the goal of being fully prepared for the second half of the season."

During Díaz's absence, the Dodgers entrusted the closer role to left-handed pitcher Tanner Scott. Scott, who had a disappointing 2025 season, has shown strong dominance this year, pitching 42.1 innings with 54 strikeouts, a 2.34 ERA, a 0.76 WHIP, and 16 saves against 1 loss and 3 wins.

Díaz has already completed his rehab starts with the Triple-A Oklahoma City Comets and is scheduled to make one final test appearance on Sunday. With Díaz's return, the Dodgers, who currently lead the majors with a 66-38 record, will have a two-headed bullpen of Díaz and Scott, making the eighth and ninth innings even more secure.

Additionally, the Dodgers have received more good news. Utility player Kiké Hernández is expected to return on Tuesday, while key starters on the injured list such as Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, and starting catcher Will Smith are also expected to return gradually in the second half, adding to the team's complete strength for the postseason push.
