Clayton Kershaw was in peak form Tuesday night in rehab with a six-inning no-hitter against the Arizona Complex League hitters. Right-handed Yoryi Simarra continued his no-hitter run into the seventh inning, and the Reds eventually hit their first hit in the eighth.
Kershaw made four strikeouts and one guaranteed in Game 4 of the minor league rehab game, the exact number of balls used was not disclosed. Dodgers coach Dave Roberts said before the game that the goal was to extend the 37-year-old's left shot to about 90 goals in six innings.
It marked the steady progress of Kershaw's recovery process, as he threw 66 goals in five games in triple-A Oklahoma City last Wednesday. Since undergoing surgery on his left knee and toe in the offseason, Kershaw has continued to adjust.
Kershaw is currently on a 60-day injury list, with activation starting as early as May 17. The Dodgers are in no hurry to get it back to the major leagues right away, but plan to schedule at least one rehab game before activation date.
Despite the Dodgers' desperate need for strength (the opening game began with the release of Lake Snell/Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow on the 15-day injury list with a shoulder inflammation), the team remained patient. The two injured players have stopped pitching for now, while Shohei Ohtani is expected to return as a pitcher for months.
Kershaw previously revealed that the recovery of his toes after surgery was slower than expected, affecting the final kick of the pitching action. Roberts noted that his form has gradually improved with each rehab game.
