The Lakers truly need him! Ayton will be the X-factor for the Lakers!

Following the Los Angeles Lakers' declarative 127-113 win against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Ayton discussed the strength of the Lakers' off-court and on-court chemistry. He noted that defense and cohesion have been the catalysts for the Lakers' rise at the end of the season.

Ayton didn't start by talking about numbers; he wanted to address the emotions. His statement speaks volumes about everything concerning the Los Angeles Lakers right now. After a dominant March where they went 15-2, Ayton attributed the team's strong performance to a simple reason in his post-game press conference:

“It comes from tremendous unity and communication. You know, we've created our own set of terminology in these battles, which is ‘next man up.’ You protect your brother. You fight for each other, you defend for each other.”

“Since we improved on defense and effort, offense has become much more fun. You learn to defend, find your rhythm on offense, and set the tone for these games.”

This transformation changed the team. The Lakers tightened up their defense first, and everything else followed. During the Lakers' northward surge period, the team ranked 10th in defensive efficiency, 6th in offensive efficiency, and 5th in net efficiency. The results were immediate. They climbed from 6th in the West to 3rd, currently holding a record of 50 wins and 26 losses, firmly securing a top-six playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Ayton believes the team's identity starts with defense. Once the defense is set, the offense opens up. He acknowledged that the current environment is different from what he experienced before.

“To be honest, I miss this feeling. It brings a sense of urgency. You and the brothers around you have gone through battles together and built chemistry. Spending time together off the court and on the court, it finally shows on the court.”

“This feeling is contagious, and Doncic, Reaves, and James are the leaders of all this.”

This urgency comes from shared battles. Practices, road trips, tough games. Over time, these moments build trust. Ayton made it clear that what happens off the court is equally important.

Ayton also highlighted the core leadership driving this. Doncic, James, and Reaves set the tone. This isn't just through their statistical output, but through their communication and consistency.

For Ayton, this change didn't happen overnight. His season was mostly inconsistent. He started strong but later struggled with stability, effort, and defensive awareness. Sometimes, his playing time decreased, and Hayes took on a more significant role. Frustration followed, including his public comments about touches and role.

But that phase is long gone. Ayton has embraced his role. He no longer tries to be the focal point; instead, he commits to making an impact every night.

In March, Ayton averaged 11.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game, with a shooting percentage of 73.3%.These stats are efficient, but the bigger change is in his energy. He runs more actively, contests shots more aggressively, and maintains focus consistently.

So far this season, he averages 12.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.0 blocks per game, with a 67.5% shooting percentage. He has recorded 20 double-doubles, and his second-chance points average is 2.6 per game. The numbers themselves are good, but considering his recent style of play, his performance in this recent period carries more weight.

Doncic can determine the Lakers' ceiling, James can anchor the Lakers' foundation, and Reaves' performance adds the finishing touch. But in the playoffs, amidst intense, physical battles, the interior becomes especially crucial. Ayton might be the Lakers' X-factor at that time.
