Official announcement: Out for the season! Farewell to Luka Doncic for the regular season! Also farewell for the first round of the playoffs.

Today, renowned reporter Shams reported that Luka Doncic's hamstring MRI confirmed a strain. He will be sidelined indefinitely and will miss the remainder of the regular season. Subsequently, well-known reporter Chris Haynes followed up, stating that Doncic suffered a Grade 2 hamstring strain.

Yesterday, sports medicine expert Evan Jeffries indicated that the recovery time for a Grade 2 hamstring strain is typically 3-6 weeks.

Another sports medicine expert, Jeff Stotts, stated today that a Grade 2 strain is also referred to as a partial tear or incomplete tear. The average absence duration for this type of injury is 35 days (approximately 14.7 games). The NBA regular season concludes on April 14 this season. The first round of the playoffs begins on April 19, and the second round starts on May 5.

If calculated based on the average duration of 35 days, Doncic would return on May 9, which is during the second round of the playoffs. So, can the Lakers advance to the second round without Doncic?

For reference, Aaron Gordon, Peyton Watson (Grade 2 strain), and Jalen Williams have all suffered hamstring strains this season and were sidelined for at least a month. Watson missed 46 days, recently returned, but is now facing weekly reevaluation due to recurring issues.

Therefore, it is a certainty that Doncic, ruled out for the regular season, will miss approximately a month and the Lakers' first-round playoff series.

Yesterday was Doncic's 64th regular-season game, just one short of the NBA's minimum 65-game requirement for award eligibility. He will not be able to participate in major award competitions.

Regarding this, Doncic's agent, Bill Duffy, issued a statement today: "This season, Luka's performance has been historic. He is not only the league's scoring leader but also led the Lakers to third place in the West and is a frontrunner in the MVP race. To ensure Luka's outstanding achievements this season receive proper recognition and to allow him the opportunity to compete for league awards, we plan to apply for a 'special circumstances exemption' to override the 65-game rule."

"Luka missed two games this season due to the birth of his second child in Slovenia. His daughter was born in Europe on December 4, yet he returned to the U.S. on December 6 to join the team. Luka has made tremendous efforts for the team and the league this season. Despite the unfortunate injury last night, his record-breaking season deserves to be remembered. We look forward to collaborating with the Players Association and league office to ensure this matter is handled fairly."

Salary expert Bobby Marks shared the league's explanation of the 'special circumstances exemption': Based on the following rules, I believe Doncic has strong grounds for appeal. His absence for two games due to his child's birth should meet the 'special circumstances' criteria outlined in the clause.
The clause stipulates: If a player fails to meet the games played standard, upon the player's application and determination by an expert jointly selected by the NBA and the Players Association, meeting all the following conditions, the player may still qualify for award eligibility:

1. The player missed one or more games due to special circumstances where participation was objectively not feasible;
2. If the player had played all regular-season games missed due to the special circumstances, his total regular-season appearances would reach at least 65 games;
3. Considering the special circumstances and all relevant context, excluding the player from award eligibility would be unfair.

These major awards are currently irrelevant for the Lakers. However, for Doncic personally, it is still worth pursuing.

What do you think, isn't LeBron James facing unfortunate timing? In the final years of his career, he encounters this situation. The only hope now is that the Lakers, led by LeBron, can successfully advance to the second round of the playoffs. If a healthy Doncic can return by then, it would be a great fortune for the Lakers and LeBron.
