Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves Aim for Playoff Return! Medical Expert Details European Treatment: Possible Return in About 3 Weeks

On April 6 Beijing time, ESPN reported that agent Bill Duffy revealed Lakers star Luka Doncic will fly to Europe for specialized treatment of a Grade 2 left hamstring strain. Doncic sustained the injury in the Lakers' 96-134 loss to the Thunder. After consulting with Lakers team doctors and his personal medical team, he made this decision.

Typically, a Grade 2 hamstring strain requires about a month of recovery, but Duffy stated Doncic is determined to return to the Lakers lineup during the playoffs; Austin Reaves, also sidelined with a Grade 2 left oblique injury, aims to return for the playoffs as well.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick said: "Both players will work to return, and our job is to keep the season going until they come back."

Just as Doncic finalized his treatment plan, the Lakers endured a devastating 48 hours: first a crushing defeat to the defending champions, then losing two key players.

Medical expert Jeffries stated: "Doncic is going to Europe for treatment of a Grade 2 partial hamstring tear. This essentially means he will receive therapies not available in the U.S. If recovery time can be cut by half (originally 4-6 weeks), theoretically he could return in 2-3 weeks, making the first round of the playoffs. Would Doncic risk worsening his injury for the Lakers? ... This somewhat resembles 'the kind of choice Kobe would make.'"

Renowned physician Jesse Morse shares a similar view and further explained potential treatment approaches: "Germany (and Switzerland) have been world leaders in cutting-edge medicine, especially in stem cell therapy. He is likely to receive combined treatments like mesenchymal stem cells, placental tissue, exosomes, some of which are not yet approved in the U.S. This reminds me of treatments Kobe underwent years ago. These agents would be injected directly into every damaged, weakened spot of the hamstring under ultrasound guidance—which is also the protocol I use in my clinic... Doncic has a very promising chance to recover and return within 3 to 4 weeks."

Combining both doctors' perspectives, Doncic using the new therapies could potentially return in about 3 weeks to participate in some first-round playoff games. However, this indeed carries the risk of aggravating the injury.
