On April 7, according to ESPN reporter Samer, former Nuggets head coach Michael Malone was unexpectedly appointed as the new head coach of the University of North Carolina men's basketball team. Malone coached the Denver Nuggets to win an NBA championship, achieving 510 wins over 12 seasons as head coach. He is one of the most respected tactical minds in the NBA and has been serving as an ESPN analyst for over 10 months.

Malone's last coaching experience in college basketball was as an assistant coach at Manhattan College in 2001. He also worked at Providence College from 1995 to 1998 and served as an assistant coach at Oakland University from 1994 to 1995.
Malone was originally a hot candidate for many NBA coaching vacancies this year and in future offseason periods, but he ultimately chose to take over this top-tier university basketball program. Malone holds extremely high prestige within the NBA circle, and he also received recognition and strong support from North Carolina legends Michael Jordan and Roy Williams, which were important factors in this hiring.College basketball is becoming increasingly professionalized, and North Carolina has now welcomed a renowned coach with nearly 25 years of deep NBA experience, combining player and assistant coaching backgrounds, and solid tactical expertise.

Malone served as head coach of the Nuggets for 10 years, recording 471 wins and 327 losses. He has coached 904 games overall as an NBA head coach, including two seasons with the Sacramento Kings.
North Carolina had previously been linked with several prominent college coaches, including Dustin May from Michigan University, Tommy Lloyd from Arizona University, and T.J. Otzelberger from Iowa State University. However, after all three publicly stated they would remain at their current positions, North Carolina turned to Malone—the coach who led the Nuggets to their only NBA championship in 2023. He was dismissed by the Nuggets last April and joined ESPN as an analyst a month later.
Davis was dismissed by North Carolina on March 25, just five days after North Carolina squandered a 19-point lead in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and lost to No. 11 seed Virginia Commonwealth University.
This marked the second consecutive year under Davis that North Carolina was eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Davis coached at his alma mater for five seasons, with a total record of 125 wins and 54 losses.
In his first season after taking over, North Carolina reached the national championship game but ultimately lost to Kansas University; however, in the following four seasons, the team failed to advance beyond the Sweet Sixteen. North Carolina's most recent (and sixth overall) NCAA championship win was in 2017, achieved under Davis's predecessor Roy Williams.

It was reported that Bulls head coach Donovan originally hoped to meet with North Carolina after the season ended, but North Carolina ultimately decided to pursue Malone instead. The Bulls side hopes to retain Donovan. Last summer, the Knicks attempted to approach Donovan for a head coaching position, but after being refused by the Bulls, Donovan secured a multi-year extension contract. With North Carolina's offer now declined, Donovan is more likely to remain and continue coaching the Bulls.
