Manchester United plans to offload Andre Onana after the season, but his high salary and desire to stay and compete for the starting spot complicate the deal.
Manchester United is planning to part ways with goalkeeper André Onana after the 2025/26 season concludes, despite him still having a long-term contract at Old Trafford.
Currently, Onana is playing for Trabzonspor on a season-long loan. However, this agreement does not include a permanent purchase clause, meaning the Cameroonian goalkeeper will return to Manchester in July.
Onana's move to Turkey was partly facilitated by an automatic salary reduction clause at Manchester United, applied when the club failed to qualify for European competition in the 2025/26 season. Accordingly, players had to accept a 25% income cut to offset financial losses.
However, the situation is changing. Under Michael Carrick's leadership, Manchester United is currently ranked third in the Premier League and has a clear path back to the UEFA Champions League. This means Onana's salary will be restored to its original level.
Insider sources indicate the 30-year-old goalkeeper wants to stay and compete for the starting position with Senne Lammens. He is also excited about the prospect of playing in Europe's top-tier competition.
Nevertheless, Manchester United's leadership is concerned that Onana's high salary will make finding a transfer partner more difficult. If they wish to move him on, the Old Trafford club might need to subsidize part of his wages, either through a permanent sale or another loan.
Onana's contract runs until 2028, and Manchester United reportedly needs to recoup at least £19 million to avoid breaching Premier League financial regulations.
Previously, former manager Ruben Amorim was displeased when Onana returned to Carrington last summer to negotiate a new contract, especially after his serious mistake in the UEFA Europa League final against Tottenham.
Inconsistent performances, coupled with a disastrous display in the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town, led to Onana gradually losing his place.
Billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe also listed Onana among the "legacy" group from the previous leadership, alongside Antony, Casemiro, Rasmus Højlund, and Jadon Sancho. These players are likely to leave the club in the upcoming summer transfer window.
In another development, backup goalkeeper Altay Bayındır is also on the list for offloading following a series of poor performances. Beşiktaş is currently interested in the Turkish international, who joined Manchester United from Fenerbahçe in 2023.
With numerous upheavals in the goalkeeping department, Manchester United faces a summer of significant restructuring to rebuild the squad and balance finances.
