The Australian national team employs numerous experienced players for the 2026 Southeast Asian futsal competition.
Football Australia has officially announced the list of 14 players representing the national futsal team for the 2026 Southeast Asian Futsal Championship. This year's tournament takes place in Thailand from April 6th to 12th, gathering strong teams from the region and promising to deliver exciting matches.
Previously known as the AFF Futsal Championship, this tournament is held biennially for national teams within Southeast Asia. For the Australian team, this marks their eighth participation, with the Futsalroos having secured the runner-up position four times, demonstrating their formidable standing.
In this year's tournament, Australia is placed in Group B alongside Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Brunei. This group is considered highly competitive due to the presence of reigning champion Indonesia and strong contenders like Malaysia and Australia. All matches will be held at the Nonthaburi Indoor Stadium – a modern venue with a capacity of approximately 10,000 seats.
Australia's squad this time combines experience and youth. Eleven players who participated in the AFC Asian Futsal Championship in January have been retained, ensuring team stability. Additionally, four new faces have been called up after impressing in domestic competitions, reflecting a clear strategy for squad development.
Head coach Miles Downie shared that international competition is a crucial opportunity for players to gain experience. He also emphasized the value of domestic tournaments in discovering and nurturing talent, and expressed confidence that the current squad is capable of competing with regional opponents.
Meanwhile, Vietnam's national futsal team is in Group A with host Thailand, Myanmar, and Timor-Leste. This is a challenging group as Thailand is the region's most successful team, and Myanmar consistently presents tough competition. According to the plan, the group stage runs from April 5th to 7th, the semi-finals on April 9th, and the final will be held on April 11th, 2026.
