Phil Foden 'vanishes' at Man City and England: Being too versatile can be detrimental!

Once considered the emblem of the upcoming generation in English football, Phil Foden is going through the toughest period of his career, at both club and national team levels.

With the 2026 World Cup just months away, Foden's chances of being part of Thomas Tuchel's plans are becoming increasingly uncertain.

Where is the Player of the Season?

Not long ago, Foden was one of the standout players in the Premier League. The 2023-2024 season saw him peak in form, contributing 40 goals in 53 matches, thereby winning the Player of the Year award.

However, in the subsequent seasons, the midfielder born in 2000 began to show signs of stagnation. The statistic of 10 goals in 45 matches last season clearly reflects the decline, especially when compared to the standards he himself had set.

Phil Foden is going through the most challenging phase of his career

The reasons stem from multiple factors. Physically, Foden had to play while not fully recovered from an ankle injury. Mentally, he also admitted to experiencing "psychological fatigue" after a period of continuous high-intensity play. These factors significantly impacted his ability to maintain stable performance.

In the current season, competition within the Man City squad has increased significantly as the team added new attacking options. Names like Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo bring freshness and better fit the tactical direction, narrowing Foden's playing opportunities. He is no longer the preferred choice for the number 10 position, while being pushed to the wing or deeper roles also doesn't allow him to maximize his strengths.

Despite still having some good matches, overall, Foden has lost the necessary consistency. Contributing only about 15 goals since the start of the season is a modest number compared to the expectations for a player once considered the core of the team.

Risk of watching the World Cup from home

The decline at club level quickly led to consequences at the national team level. In England's recent squad, Foden was given playing opportunities in both friendly matches against Uruguay and Japan. However, he did not leave a significant mark.

Against Uruguay, Foden played as an attacking midfielder but did not create many clear chances and was substituted early. In the match against Japan, he was tested in the "false nine" role due to Harry Kane's absence, but this approach proved ineffective. Foden had the lowest number of touches among the starting lineup and did not contribute significantly to the attack.

Foden risks watching the World Cup from home

After the two matches, coach Tuchel candidly admitted that his player "struggled to perform on the pitch," despite training well. He also did not guarantee Foden's inclusion in the 26-player World Cup squad, emphasizing that current form is the deciding factor.

Statistical figures further highlight the issue. Foden has gone over 20 consecutive matches without scoring for England, a poor run of form for an attacking player. Despite nearly 50 appearances for the national team, he has yet to establish a clear impact in major tournaments.

One of Foden's biggest difficulties is not having a fixed position in the tactical system. He can play various roles, from attacking midfielder, winger to false striker. However, this versatility itself means he lacks a "anchor" position to assert himself.

In his preferred number 10 role, Foden directly competes with Jude Bellingham, a player currently in high form and almost guaranteed a starting spot. Additionally, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers are also highly regarded options due to their ability to create breakthroughs and more stable recent performances.

Meanwhile, being used as a backup option for Kane in the forward line does not suit Foden's qualities. Recent experiments show he struggles when playing as a center forward, especially against well-organized defenses.
