Manchester United accelerates contract renewals for key players, with two announcements planned! Youth prospects may leave for free.

Manchester United is now focused on retaining its core players, with new contract negotiations for Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo largely agreed. Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that the club plans to officially announce both renewals before the end of this season.

“Maguire and Mainoo have returned from the England national team, and Manchester United is now ready to speed up the process, signing new contracts with both players before the World Cup,” Romano said. “This is Manchester United’s task: to complete all signing procedures before the season ends. Mainoo’s contract will extend to 2031, while Maguire will renew for one year until 2027, with an additional one-year extension option.”

Regarding the specific progress of their renewals, Romano explained: “Mainoo’s contract talks are in the final stages, while Maguire’s negotiations are essentially concluded, and he will sign soon. Manchester United plans to announce before the season ends—this is the club’s intention, and communication with the players is currently progressing very smoothly.”

After these two renewals, veteran Tom Heaton, nearing 40, may also sign another one-year contract with Manchester United to continue as the team’s third goalkeeper.

Manchester United has several other players whose contracts expire this summer: Casemiro, Sancho, and Tyrell Malasia are certain to leave, while youth prospects Dan Gore and Ethan Ennis have not yet renewed and may both depart for free.

This season, midfielder Gore has been on loan at Rotherham in the EFL Championship, appearing 24 times. His contract signed in 2023 is nearing expiry; British media reveal it lacks a 12-month extension option, meaning his eight-year stint at Manchester United could end this summer.

Under manager Erik ten Hag, Gore debuted in the League Cup against Crystal Palace and played in the Premier League against Aston Villa; he also made several Champions League substitute lists. However, injuries have hampered Gore’s performance; over the past two seasons, he has been loaned out three times by Manchester United, nearly every time affected by injuries.

In the first half of this season, Gore was a regular starter for Rotherham, but unfortunately suffered another shoulder injury in February, missing several crucial relegation battles. Manager Matt Hamshaw stated he was praying for Gore to return by the season’s end. The 21-year-old appears to have done so, making a brief appearance during the international break.

21-year-old forward Ennis was loaned this season to Fleetwood Town in EFL League Two, switching from winger to wing-back and performing quite well, earning his team’s Player of the Month award in January. After playing first-team matches, this former Liverpool academy product is unwilling to return to youth team football; Manchester United may accommodate him by relinquishing a one-year priority renewal option, allowing him to transfer freely this summer.

Ennis hasn’t completely abandoned hope of staying at Manchester United, though considering the team has many wing players available, his chances of breaking through are quite slim.

Ennis told the Manchester Evening News: “I feel I should let things unfold naturally; after the loan, I’ve worked hard to create better conditions. Whether staying at Manchester United, leaving, or any other scenario, I’ll be prepared. Honestly, I’m open to any outcome. Obviously, you need to choose the most beneficial option, but I feel each outcome has its own merits. So, I’ll wait and see.”

Manchester United could still renew Ennis’s contract and then sell him permanently in the summer window to secure some transfer fee, but a more likely outcome of that approach would be the player staying at the club and being loaned out again.
