Manchester United officially announced on Tuesday that 33-year-old English center-back Harry Maguire has signed a contract extension. The new deal is for one year, but includes an option for an additional season. "Big Head's" contract was originally ending this season, yet, following Carrick's appointment, he returned to being a key player, and his displays persuaded the club to provide a new contract.

Maguire agreed to reduce his original salary of £180,000 to £190,000 per week, with the new contract believed to be around £120,000 weekly. However, according to BBC reports, Maguire's basic wage has decreased, but the contract includes incentive clauses; if the club qualifies for the Champions League, along with other performance-related bonuses, his total income might actually increase!
In 2019, Maguire joined Manchester United from Leicester City for a record £80 million defender transfer fee, making 266 appearances and winning the League Cup and FA Cup. His career at Old Trafford has seen several ups and downs: less than half a year after his transfer, he was appointed captain by Solskjaer and became a key starter. However, due to injuries, Maguire's performance declined later, attracting considerable criticism. In April 2022, he even faced bomb threats, requiring police to search his residence to ensure safety.
Under Ten Hag's management, Maguire, often mocked as "the aircraft carrier," was no longer favored; in July 2023, he was stripped of his captaincy and nearly sold to West Ham United for £30 million. Only due to wage compensation issues, the transfer failed. Nevertheless, Maguire proved himself through action, repeatedly rescuing Ten Hag in critical situations.
During Ruben Amorim's tenure, Maguire wasn't a guaranteed starter, but his goals also saved the Portuguese manager. After Carrick arrived, Maguire regained his starting role, significantly improving his form, participating in all 10 consecutive matches, becoming the catalyst for a swift contract renewal.
By the time Maguire's new contract expires, this English defensive stalwart will be 35 years old; The Sun reports he is already preparing to start studying for his professional coaching certificate. British media revealed Maguire rejected offers from several overseas clubs, wishing to retire at Manchester United. Among the teams inviting him included MLS club Inter Miami, founded by David Beckham, which offered higher wages; additionally, Napoli from Serie A also extended an olive branch.

Explaining his decision to accept a reduced salary for the extension, Maguire stated: "Playing for Manchester United is an immense honor, this responsibility brings pride to me and my family every day. I am delighted to have served this remarkable club for eight seasons, continuing to play before our loyal fans, striving to create more memorable moments together."
Maguire added: "Carrick is excellent, his communication skills are outstanding, and his tactical understanding is high. You can feel the excitement within this team, its potential and ambition. The determination to compete for major trophies is evident throughout the club. I believe the glory we can create together lies ahead."
Maguire's family is settled in northwest England; as a traditional British person, he is not keen on leaving his homeland, thus staying at United is the best choice for both him and the club. Critics may focus on Maguire's weaknesses, yet successive United managers ultimately recognize his strengths: excellent mental resilience, maintaining composure under pressure, strong tackling ability, wide passing range, good positional sense, and leadership within the dressing room.
With Casemiro confirmed to depart, United needs Maguire's experience to provide stability. He can guide young center-backs like Lenny Yoro and Eden Haven in their development. United can also focus on strengthening other weak areas in the summer transfer window, particularly midfield and the left flank. Manager Carrick commented: "Harry (Maguire) brings experience to the team, which is very important for us. He has experienced everything at the club and understands what it all means."
Manchester United's football director Jason Wilcox said: "Harry possesses the mentality and resilience required to play for Manchester United; he is an extremely professional player, bringing valuable experience and leadership to our dynamic, ambitious young squad. Like everyone at the club, Harry is determined to help Manchester United achieve sustained, consistent success."

However, after renewing his contract, Maguire will miss next Monday's Premier League match against Leeds United at Old Trafford; he is suspended due to a red card in the last game against Bournemouth, and because of disrespect towards the fourth official, the United defender faces an FA charge, awaiting a decision that might also cause him to miss another match away at Chelsea.
