Manchester United will face Tottenham Hotspur at the San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao on Wednesday for the Europa League title, which will secure Champions League qualification for next season, and a defeat will be a nowhere to be gained. Before the game, the club tailor-made £1,000 each of the players in a Paul Smith suit in the hope of motivating the players to fight hard in the final.
The club has officially released photos of captain Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Mason Mount, Christian Eriksen, Toby Collier and Buyneil trying on their final suits. Since the days of Ferguills, the Red Devils have had a tradition of dressing up in the run-up to the final. Ahead of last year's FA Cup final, Manchester United players also donned suits and shoes and won the title 2-1 against Manchester City. According to the data, Manchester United's cooperation with Paul Smith can be traced back to 2008, when Ferdin, Ronaldo and others led the team to win the Champions League.
It is worth mentioning that 19-year-old French centre-back Lenny Yoro also took part in the fitting, which is thought to be his call-up for the Europa League final. Joro was injured in Manchester United's Premier League tie with West Ham United and has been sidelined ever since. Injuries to him and fellow centre-back De Ligt have given Swedish centre-back Victor Lindelof, who is set to leave at the end of his contract this summer, to start in the final, and he also took part in a suit fitting.
Boss Ruben Amorim warned the United players that a defeat in the final would be a laughing stock and that no one in history will remember the loser, so the team must win. Moreover, even if they win the championship and qualify for the Champions League, it will not be enough to make up for the poor result of 16th place in the Premier League.
Amorim himself lost the Europa League final as a player, playing for Benfica in 2014 and drawing 0-0 with Sevilla in the final in Turin, before losing on penalties to La Liga's 'Europa League kings'.
"One of the things I learned as a player is that you have to win. Nobody would say, 'I'm a finalist', especially at a club like Manchester United, so we just have to win the final. It's really important, it means a lot to us, and we want to bring the title to our fans. It's a mixed feeling, I'm really excited, but at the same time I know my responsibilities as a manager of Manchester United. I've always been frustrated this season, so I really want to help the team win this final. We have to give the club, to the fans, to the staff, to everyone."
The United boss added: 'It's difficult, even if you win the Europa League, it's not enough, it's not enough relative to the support the fans have given us this season. If needed, they would be willing to swim to Bilbao even if they didn't get a ticket to the final! I know that, thank you very much for everything the fans have done and we will do everything we can to give them back."
United will take a public training session at Carrington on Tuesday before flying to the final venue in the afternoon, with Amorim at his pre-match press conference in Bilbao that evening, where fans will be informed of the recovery of the likes of Yoro, De Ligt and Diogu Darlow. Amorim said he would be straightforward with some of his players that they would not be able to start the final or even be on the bench. "Of course, no player wants to hear that, but I'm comfortable with it, it's my job. We've got a lot of players out injured and it's good to play a minute in the final, but everybody wants to play the full 90 minutes and it's all about the team winning. If we win, every player is a member of the championship team and they all win the Europa League. Players have to do their job and try to win. The manager is different, you have to prepare well, help the coaching staff and speak correctly before the game. It's important for a manager to do that."
Manchester United's final opponents Tottenham Hotspur are already ahead of the curve with injury problems in midfield, but the team's core James Maddison was spotted travelling with the squad when they travel to Spain on Monday. Twenty-one Tottenham players boarded a plane to Bilbao on Monday, including Maddison, who was supposed to be out for the season.
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has previously said that Maddison has missed the rest of the season with a knee injury and it is unclear if he will be able to make a magical return. However, he will definitely have the opportunity to play, as Kulusevski, who is also injured, is not on the list. Tottenham Hotspur players such as Son Heung-min, Sergio Romero, Sollanke, Matisse Tel and Donny van der Ven were also part of the travel team.
Tottenham finalists: Guillermo Vicario, Antonin Kinski, Pedro Poro, Jed Spencer, Mitch van der Ven, Christian Romero, Ben Davies, Callum Olusesi, Damora Ajay, Pape Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur, James Maddison, Mitch Moore, Brennan Johnson, Wilson O'Dobert, Son Heung-min, Mattis Tel, Richarlison, Dominic Solanke, Dane Scarlett, Will Lankhill.
