Next Week's Battle for World No. 1: A Detailed Look at the Monte Carlo Masters Draw

The main draw for the 2026 ATP 1000 Monte Carlo Masters men's singles is out. Alcaraz and Sinner, seeded first and second, occupy opposite halves, initiating their contest for the world's top spot here.

As the defending champion, Alcaraz can secure 1000 points and retain his world number one position if he successfully defends his title. Otherwise, Sinner has the opportunity to take over.

Sinner can reclaim the world number one ranking after Monte Carlo if the following conditions are met:

1. Defeat Alcaraz in the final.

2. Reach the final while Alcaraz loses in the semifinals.

3. Advance to the semifinals while Alcaraz is eliminated before reaching that stage.

Top Eight Seed Matchups:

[1] Alcaraz vs. Bublik [8]

[4] Musetti vs. de Minaur [5]

[7] Medvedev vs. Zverev [3]

[6] Aliassime vs. Sinner [2]

[Quarter 1 Draw]

Alcaraz's first opponent in his title defense will be determined between Argentine player Baez and the 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka, who enters with a wild card. If Wawrinka wins, he will face Alcaraz in the second round. This is something Wawrinka has been looking forward to, having previously expressed his wish to play Alcaraz before retiring. Therefore, he will give his utmost effort when presented with this chance.

Other seeded players in Alcaraz's section are Tiafoe, Lehecka, and Bublik, but their clay-court prowess is generally considered weaker than their hard-court performance. Additionally, Echeverri and Griekspoor are formidable opponents on clay.

[Quarter 2 Draw]

Fourth seed Musettireturns from injury and will face the winner between Washer and Machacz in the second round. This matchup instantly helps distinguish the Monaco flag from the Polish flag, right? [Laughs] Interestingly, another Polish player, Hurkacz, is also in this quarter, facing Darderi in a tough first-round match.

Fifth seed de Minaurhas a favorable draw, but must not underestimate his potential second-round opponent, Norrie.

[Quarter 3 Draw]

Matches in this quarter are highly anticipated, featuring many fan-favorite players.

If Berrettini wins his first round against a qualifier, he will face Medvedev in the second round – an exciting prospect. Medvedev is less dominant on clay, giving Berrettini a chance to advance.

Zverev's potential second-round opponent is the big-serving Perricard. Zverev's consistency should give him the edge. Other notable players in this quarter include Fonseca, Khachanov, Rublev, and the Belgian favorite Bergs.

This quarter gathers several prominent post-95 generation stars: Medvedev, Zverev, Rublev, and Berrettini, all former Top 10 players.

[Quarter 4 Draw]

Since Sinner was under suspension before last year's Rome Masters, he faces no points defense pressure in the early part of the clay season. His first opponent will be the winner between wild card youngster Kwame and French player Humbert. Other seeded players in his quarter are F. Cerundolo (16), Ruud (9), and Aliassime (6).

Tsitsipas faces Cerundolo in the first round, holding a 2-0 head-to-head advantage. Let's see if Tsitsipas can regain his form.

First-round matches worth watching:

Baez vs. Wawrinka

Echeverri vs. Dimitrov

Fonseca vs. Diallo

Rublev vs. Borges

F. Cerundolo vs. Tsitsipas

Which players have withdrawn?

Before the draw, Djokovic, Fritz, Draper, Davidovich Fokina, Fils, Munar, and Korda announced their withdrawals. Djokovic reportedly has a shoulder injury. Draper and Korda are frequent withdrawal names.

Korda defeated Alcaraz in Miami, then lost immediately in the next round. Did winning against Alcaraz come at the cost of aggravating an old injury? Draper beat Djokovic in Indian Wells and now is also out. Fils, who recently returned, surged to the Miami semifinals – is he injured again, or is this a planned rest? This is the only Masters event not mandatory, so withdrawals aren't solely due to injuries.
