A look at the new look of the ATP from the Madrid Masters: the "competition of the giants" in the post-Big Three era

In the former ATP tennis world, the "Big Three" of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic ruled for a long time, dividing the Grand Slams and dominating major tournaments. But as time goes by, with Federer and Nadal retiring and Djokovic entering the latter stages of his career, the men's tennis landscape is quietly being reshaped.

The comparison between the top eight seeds at the Madrid Masters and the players who advanced to the quarterfinals is a vivid illustration.

Top eight seeded lineup

Due to the withdrawal of No. 2 seed Alcaraz before the tournament, there are only seven actual big seeds. However, in the end, only the No. 5 seed Draper made it to the quarter-finals.

Among the seven top seeds, Djokovic was knocked out of the second round in the first match. Rune retired in the first match of the second round. Rublev's opponents retired in the second round and he was eliminated in the first match of the third round.

No. 1 seed Zverev lost to Serundolo in the fourth round.

No. 3 seed Fritz lost to Ruud in the fourth round.

No. 6 seed De Minaur lost to Musetti in the fourth round.

The line-up that advanced to the quarterfinals:

Among the eight players who advanced to the quarterfinals, Menswick, Draper, Arnaldi, Musetti and Diallo are all post-00 players, accounting for most of the country.

Medvedev, Serundolo and Ruud barely managed to squeeze into the quarterfinals.

In the fourth round of the game, the post-90s and post-95 players Bublik, Paul, Tiafoe, De Minaur and Dimitrov all lost to the post-00 players. The only exception was Medvedev, who fought hard in three sets and won against Nakashima. In addition, in the "civil war" of post-95 players, Serundolo won against Zverev and Ruud won against Fritz.

The list of the top eight presents a more complex and fierce situation. Cerundolo (21), Mensik (23), Arnaldi (44) and Diallo (78) are among the non-traditional high-ranking players. With tenacious fighting spirit and changeable tactics, Cerundolo constantly broke through himself in the game; Mensik, on the other hand, relied on his solid basic skills and flexible ball path, and staged many dark horse miracles. Eginardi beat Novak Djokovic to send Tiafoe to the quarter-finals. Diallo may have been lucky enough to draw the table, but he defeated 15th seed Dimitrov in three sets in the fourth round to advance to the quarterfinals.

This situation reflects two major characteristics of the ATP arena after the Big Three era.

First, the new generation of forces has risen rapidly, such as Mensik, Musetti and other young players, who are fearless to challenge, integrate modern tennis concepts in technology, and are extremely lethal in terms of serve and forehand attack.

Second, the tennis world is no longer the monopoly of "core players". After the era of the Big Three dominating for more than 20 years, the post-95 players cannot control the tennis world, and even the outstanding post-00s players represented by Alcaraz only control part of the seats in the final rounds of the tournament.

Mesozoic players such as Medvedev, Zverev, and Ruud continue to defend some of their territory with their rich experience, mature tactical system, and strong psychological quality. The new force of the post-05 generation, represented by Mensik, has risen and worked hard in the ATP tournament to get a piece of the pie.

Nowadays, there is no absolute dominance in the ATP arena, the game is full of uncertainty, and the collision between different styles of players is becoming more and more frequent. This not only enhances the enjoyment of the event, but also makes the championship full of suspense. In the future, as the replacement of the old and the new continues, the trend of "competing for the deer" will be further deepened, and the men's tennis world is expected to usher in more new legends and exciting matchups.
