Gabriel Diallo defeated Zizou Bergos to claim his first career ATP Tour title in the final of the Liber Boma Open in 's-Hertogenbosch on Sunday. At the age of 23, he became the fourth Canadian to win an ATP Tour title this century.
On Sunday, Diallo lifted the trophy at the ATP 250 in the Netherlands with a 7-5, 7-6(8) win over Berges, both eager to win their first career title. The serve-breaker saved three set points in the second set tie-break, which took one hour and 58 minutes to seal the victory, erasing last year's defeat to Karen Khachanov in the final in Almaty.
Diallo said in an on-field interview:
"Oh my God, I'm speechless. It's something I've dreamed of since I was a kid – winning an ATP Tour title. It means a lot to me to be here after losing the final last year. I'm happy not only for myself, but also for the whole team. ”
Diallo became the fourth Canadian to win an ATP Tour singles title this century, following Milos Raonic (8), Felix. Aliassime (7 crowns) and Denis Shapovalov (3 crowns). In addition to congratulating Berges and thanking the team and the audience, Diallo shared an interesting fact from the week during the ceremony:
"I would like to thank the stringer for misspelling my name as 'Diablo' (Diablo) and for giving him a special shout-out. I don't know if he's there or not, but I told him earlier this week that if I finally had the opportunity to speak on the microphone, I would bring it up. ”
On Monday, Diallo's PIF ATP ranking will soar 11 spots to a career-high No. 44.
On Bergers' side, despite a number of spectacular winning points, he was unable to stop his in-form opponents. According to the stats, Diallo scored 76% of his first serve (37 out of 49) and hit nine aces. He fell behind 4-6 in the tie-break of the second set, but finally cashed in on the second match point before falling to the grass in excitement.
It was the second time the 26-year-old Belgian has lost an ATP Tour final, but he will still move up 14 places on Monday to return to a career-high No. 49.
As a good friend of Diallo, Berges warmly said in his speech as runner-up:
"Gabriel, how did you play so well today? Congratulations! You're a great guy, I really think so. Congratulations to your team, we've been training and getting along together for the last few years, and we'll soon be playing doubles at Wimbledon. At least I'm happy for you! ”
The only seeded player in the semi-finals of this year's tournament is No.2 seed Amber, who lost to Diallo in the semi-finals. No. 1 seed Dmitry Medvedev reached the quarter-finals, while No. 3 seed Khachanov also reached the quarter-finals, losing to Diallo. No. 4 seed Popyrin stopped in the second round and lost to Berges. Therefore, the championship and runner-up of Diallo and Berges are full of gold, and they will directly beat the big seeds to meet in the final.
Diallo is next up in this week's Queen's Cup in London, where he will face British wildcard Billy Harris in the first round. Berges competed in the first round against eighth seed Khachanov at the Halle Open in Germany.
